"I Been Fishin' Longer Than You" Report

May 19, 2026
Alright, listen up you young whippersnappers! Grandpa Sasquatch's here with the only fishin' forecast you need, straight outta the Tacoma area. Now get off my lawn! 1. Listen Up, Junior: Don't be showin' up empty-handed. Bring beer. Good beer. And extra wormies. The fish are always hungry, just like me after a good nap.
2. What's Bitin': Days 1-3: Puyallup River: Chinook should be kickin' in. Use spinners, something shiny to blind 'em. Days 4-7: Chambers Creek: Chum's likely movin' in. Spoons and jigs will do the trick. Don't be usin' my lucky spoon, I'll know. Days 8-10: Commencement Bay: Bottom fishin' for flounder if you're desperate. Otherwise, stay home. Days 11-14: Narrows Bridge: Rockfish and maybe a stray lingcod if you're real lucky. But be careful, tide's a mean mistress.
3. Grandpa's Grumble: These youngsters with their fancy boats and fish finders! Back in my day, we just used a stick, some string, and sheer grit. And we caught bigger fish! You call yourselves anglers? Hmph. Now go catch me dinner! And leave the good beer at the door.

Tacoma Fishing Forecast & Tide Charts

History of the Place: Tacoma, known as the “City of Destiny,” was a cannery powerhouse at the turn of the century. The Puyallup Tribe has maintained ancestral fishing rights here for millennia. Point Defiance has been a public fishing destination since the late 1800s, and the legendary Boathouse has seen generations of anglers chase “Commencement Bay Chrome.”

List of Fishing Areas:

  • The Clay Banks: A steep underwater cliff off Point Defiance.

  • The Narrows: Famous for its heavy currents and Coho.

  • Commencement Bay: Deep-water trolling for Kings and Chum.

  • American Lake: A top-tier WDFW fish stocking destination nearby.

Type of Fish: Chinook, Coho, Chum Salmon, Steelhead, and Kokanee.

Season Fishing Forecast:

  • Winter: Blackmouth trolling along the Clay Banks.

  • Spring: American Lake trout fishing is at its best.

  • Summer: Heavy-hitting Chinook runs in Marine Area 11.

  • Fall: Massive Chum salmon returns in the South Sound.

Gear & Strategy: Use “glow” flashers and hoochies in the deep water of Commencement Bay. The silt from the Puyallup River can cloud the water, so visibility is key. Verify your WDFW area codes before dropping a line in the Narrows.

Grandpa's Cold Hard Truth: Stephen Hawking tried to explain the universe, but even he couldn’t explain why you Juniors try to fish the Narrows on a max flood tide without a heavy motor. Check the Tacoma tide charts or get used to being pushed back to Steilacoom.
