Anacortes Forecast
"I Been Fishin' Longer Than You" Report
May 19, 2026Day 4-7: Seems like the pinks are partying a little early this year. Head up to Rosario Strait and drag some spoons. Easy pickins' if you don't mind 'em bein' a little...pink.
Day 8-10: Crabs are crawlin' all over the place. Drop your pots near Obstruction Pass and you'll be eatin' like a king – or a big, hairy Sasquatch.
Day 11-14: Halibut are still hangin' out in the deeper water. If you got the guts to battle 'em, head to the western side of Whidbey. Pro Tip: Talk dirty to the fish. I swear, they like it. (Don't ask how I know.) What's Bitin': Those pesky sea gulls are bitin' my nerves! As for actual fish? Chinook, Pinks, Halibut, and Dungeness Crabs are all on the menu. Grandpa's Grumble: Back in my day, fish practically jumped into your boat! Now ya gotta bribe 'em with shiny metal and whisper sweet nothin's. What's this world comin' to?
Grandpa's Gear Recommendation: Stop usin' that rusty junk. Fresh Salmon Lures are on sale here. Buy 'em or keep complainin' about the one that got away.
Anacortes Fishing Forecast & Tide Charts
History of the Place: Known as the “Gateway to the San Juans,” Anacortes was once the “Salmon Packing Capital of the World.” At its peak, 11 canneries lined the Guemes Channel. It remains a rugged, working-class fishing town where the culture is defined by tidal rips and salty air.
List of Fishing Areas:
-
Deception Pass: A narrow, high-current gauntlet.
-
Burrows Bay: Sheltered water for Chinook.
-
Guemes Channel: Trolling grounds right outside the marina.
-
Cypress Island: Deep reefs for Lingcod and Rockfish.
Type of Fish: Chinook, Coho, Halibut, and Lingcod.
Season Fishing Forecast:
-
Winter: Cold-water bottom fishing and occasional Blackmouth.
-
Spring: Lingcod and Halibut are the primary targets in May.
-
Summer: Prime time for Chinook in Marine Area 7.
-
Fall: Coho stack up before heading into the Skagit system.
Gear & Strategy: In Deception Pass, you must “back-troll” against the current. Use heavy lead to stay on the bottom for Lingcod. Always check the Anacortes tide charts—the “Pass” is no place for a novice during a 4-knot exchange.
Grandpa's Cold Hard Truth: Keanu Reeves might move like a ghost in the movies, but you need to move like a hunter here. The San Juans are a maze. If you don’t have your Washington tide charts synced to your brain, you’re just expensive bait for the current.
