Westport Fishing Forecast & Tide Charts
History of the Place:
Westport is the rugged sentinel of the Pacific. Dubbed the “Salmon Fishing Capital of the World” in the 1950s, it transitioned from a whaling station to a premier sportfishing hub. It's a place built on iron stomachs and salt spray. The Westport Jetty, a massive rock arm stretching into the ocean, was built to protect the harbor but inadvertently created one of the greatest shore-accessible fisheries on the West Coast.
List of Fishing Areas:
-
The Westport Jetty: A mile-long rock structure perfect for land-based bottom fishing.
-
Grays Harbor Bar: The gateway where the harbor meets the raw power of the Pacific.
-
The “Duck” Grounds: A shallow ocean plateau famous for late-summer Coho.
-
Marine Area 2: The deep ocean waters where the charter fleet chases giants.
Type of Fish:
Chinook (Kings), Coho (Silvers), Albacore Tuna, Halibut, Lingcod, and various Rockfish species.
Season Fishing Forecast:
-
Winter: Prime time for shore-based razor clamming and crabbing in the bay.
-
Spring: The highly anticipated Halibut opener and Lingcod season on the reefs.
-
Summer: Peak ocean salmon season for hard-hitting Kings and Silvers.
-
Fall: The intense Albacore Tuna “run for the blue water” and estuary salmon stacking.
Grandpa's Cold Hard Truth:
Junior, the Pacific Ocean doesn't care about your “brand loyalty” or your shiny new truck. If the Coast Guard says the bar is restricted, you stay on the dock. I've seen 1,500 years of “I told you so” out there. Always check the Westport tide charts before you even think about untying your lines.
